Test Code 9902 Group B Strep

Purpose

The group B strep test is a routine antenatal test. GBS screening identifies the presence of the bacteria in the vaginal/rectal area of a pregnant woman. GBS can cause early-onset GBS disease that occurs within the first week after birth.

Specimen Type: Vaginal / Rectal Swab

Container/Tube: Red Topped Copan Swab

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth,

   date & time of collection, collection site and person collecting.

2. Refrigerate specimen during transport.

Critical: GBS Positive
