Test Code 9560 Culture (Pharyngitis)

Purpose

Pharyngitis Culture is generally performed on patients with persistent pharyngitis who are negative for Group A Beta Strep either by rapid method or culture. Cultures are evaluated for beta-hemolytic growth of Streptococcus group A, C, or G.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen type: Throat

Specimen Volume: Swab in Container

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth,

    date & time of collection, and person collecting.

2. Depress the tongue with a tongue depressor. Sample the posterior

     pharynx, tonsils, and inflamed areas with a sterile swab.

3. Transport specimen at room temperature.

 

Reference Values

Normal:         No group A, C or G Streptococcus recovered.

Critical:          Streptococcus dysgalatiae (Grp C or G) recovered.
