Purpose

Measuring cholesterol levels, as undesirable cholesterol levels places one at higher risk for coronary artery disease.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Blood (Plasma or Serum)

Preferred: Light-Green Top

Acceptable: Gold Top

Specimen Volume: Full Tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth,

    date & time of collection and person collecting.

2. If delay in specimen transport > 1 hour, centrifuge tube.

3. Refrigerate specimen during transport.

Cholesterol

               Desirable Level: < 200 mg / dL

               Marginally-High Risk: 200 - 239 mg / dL

               High-Risk: > 240 mg / dL

HDL Cholesterol

               High Risk: < 35 mg / dL

LDL Cholesterol

               Desirable: < 130 mg / dL

               Borderline: 130 - 160 mg / dL

               High Risk: > 160 mg / dL

Triglycerides

               Normal: < 200 mg / dL
               Borderline High: 200 - 400 mg / dL

               High: 400 - 1,000 mg / dL

               Very High: > 1,000 mg / dL
