Purpose
Diagnosing and monitoring treatment of acute and chronic kidney diseases.
Adjusting dosage of renally excreted medications.
Monitoring kidney transplant recipients.
Estimating glomerular filtration rate for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD)
and those with risk factors for CKD (diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease,
and family history of kidney disease).

Specimen Requirements
Specimen Type: Blood (Plasma or Serum)
Preferred: Light-Green Top
Acceptable: Gold Top
Specimen Volume: Full Tube
Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL
Collection Instructions:
1. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth,
date & time of collection, and person collecting.
2. If delay in specimen transport > 1 hour, centrifuge tube.
3. Refrigerate specimen during transport.
Specimen Type: Urine (24-Hour Collection)
Container/Tube: Sterile Plastic Container
Specimen Volume: Entire 24-Hour Collection
Collection Instructions:
1. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth, and
date & time of collection (Both Start & End Times).
2. For 24 Hour Urines: Refrigerate during collection
and follow instructions for “24 Hour Urine Collection”
under “Specimen Collection and Handling” within the
links menu on the left side of the screen.)
3. Refrigerate specimen after collection.
