Test Code 8101 Glucose Tolerance (1 Hour)

Important Note

Patient must be on a normal diet for 3 days prior to testing, and be fasting for at least 8 to 14 hours prior to test.

Purpose

The glucose tolerance test measures your body's response to sugar (glucose). The glucose tolerance test can be used to screen for type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Blood (Plasma or Serum)

Preferred: Light-Green Top

Acceptable: Gold Top

Specimen Volume: Full Tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

 

Specimen Type: Urine (Hourly Collection)

Container/Tube: Sterile Plastic Container

Specimen Volume: 50 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 5 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Patient must be fasting at least 8 - 14 hours prior to testing.

2. Give patient a 50 g dose of glucose beverage,

     noting time of ingestion (patient must drink

     entire beverage within 5 minutes).

3. Collect specimens 1 hour post ingestion of

     glucose beverage.

4. Label specimens with patient’s full name, date of birth,

     date & time of collection, and person collecting.
