Purpose

Lactose tolerance tests measure your body's ability to break down lactose.

Specimen Requirements

Patient Preparation:

1. Patient must be fasting.

2. Patient’s weight is required for calculation of lactose solution.

 

Specimen Type: Blood (Plasma or Serum)

Preferred: Light-Green Top

Acceptable: Gold Top

Specimen Volume: Full Tube

Specimen Minimum Volume: 2 mL

 

Collection Instructions:

1. Order lactose solution from the pharmacy.

2. Draw a fasting specimen.

3. Give patient lactose solution.

4. Draw specimens at 15, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes 

     post-ingestion of lactose solution.

5. Label specimen with patient’s full name, date of birth, date & 

     time of each collection and person collecting.

6. If delay in specimen transport > 1 hour, centrifuge tube.

7. Refrigerate specimen during transport.
